Pity You- The Moral Police in Kerala

Yesterday I saw a post in one of the groups I belong to on Facebook. The group is supposed to be for a cause of sharing knowledge on spiritual base. But I found a cheap post in which a man was opposing a woman who had posted a status on her fb wall against 'sadachara police' of Kerala.

Three things I will be talking about are, the episode that happened in Calicut, the stupidity of moral police in Kerala and about Jisha Elizabeth`s post in fb. Let me start by telling you what is the incident on which the whole news is revolving around.

The episode took place at a renowned cafe 'Downtown' at Calicut in Kerala rated 4.5/5 on TripAdviser. One of the malayalam channels namely 'Jaihind TV' covered a footage of a couple smooching at the cafe, using a hidden camera. Within a couple of hours of airing the video in the channel some people claiming themselves to be moral police came and destroyed the cafe. They also asked Police to file a case against the shop owner. The same day by evening people of Calicut expressed their sincerity and support towards the shop by turning up at the shop. The whole area on P.T.Usha road was jam-packed with the cafe fandom after the shop was attacked.

Now what is the whole point of creating a big scene and drama out of this? Reminding you the Article 19 of Indian constitution, Expressing affection is not a problem anywhere in the world until it affects a third person. Please tell me in what way you-'sadachara policemen' felt offended?
I feel its pure jealousy and nothing else!
Or maybe you are feeling insecure about your children!
Trust the way you have brought up your children, people. If you have put seeds of your culture and tradition in them they wont be shaken at any point of time. I have a question, do these moral police get offended only when they see youngsters expressing affection? because I never saw anybody reacting so much when a girl faced embarrassment in a crowd in the same city when her chudi fell down and she couldn't tie it back as she was holding an infant in her arms, these men stood and enjoyed the scene instead of helping the woman save her shame, or when somebody is abused in the public which is a common scene in Kerala and they forget their own morals when they return home drunk at night to misbehave with their wives. First prove through your actions that you are worth enough to react in such situations. Its so cheap of malayalis to react for unreasonable things around them. Say for an example when Saddam Hussain was killed in Iraq, People in Kerala called for a strike. How ridiculous, isn't?
whats the whole point? Is it Show off, media or Fame? What do you people want?

From this picture, it is very evident that it was a non-malayali couple. Culture is what men created and many just follow without knowing what for or why they follow it. It is not necessary that a foreigner coming to our native should follow our traditions and customs. Either be open to welcome them as they are or just stop them from entering your territory. You cant force someone to obey those rules and regulations you formed!  Come on guys It is a cafe not an institution to say they are breaking rules!

Now Jisha Elizabeth`s post in fb (translation in my words) says that,
She isn't kissing her boyfriend in public just because she is shy and not because she doesn't want to. She would have called these Moral police and kissed her boyfriend in front of them to test the strength of their backbone, Just like these moral police calling media in advance and then playing a whole drama as in real. The second half of her post she criticizes those people who praise the leelavilasams (playfulness) of Lord Sree Krishna who played romantic games and kissed his 10000+ Cow herd girls who were his devotees. (Gopika) And the same people consider these public display of affection by the commoners in cafe as dirty deeds.

It is her wish to post what she wants on her facebook wall. You peep into her profile and found this post wild enough to make accusations and speak nonsense among your friends. How cheap? Are you so jobless or Is it that you want attention? Or may be let me put it this way "There are some who are motivated by abusive handles and are eager to abuse women`s posts" If you felt offended by her post for any reason keep it to yourself. Okay a little more further you may share your views with your friends. But one fellow uploaded few pics of Jisha (taken from her profile itself) in the group which consists of 30k+ people. He wasn't the one who felt offended about the status. Probably this fellow was just trying to show others that he can steal any locked pictures from a girl`s profile. Smart or Stupid?? I asked this person to explain to me the reason why he had uploaded the girl`s picture without any caption or reason told. Poor chap he doesn't realize that its a cyber crime to share a girl`s photo and make vulgar comments on it. By evening when I opened the group, My jaws fell open to see the comments on her photo. Some of the comments were
*"She has a face like Dogshit burnt"
*"Is she a sister of Shoorpanaka? She belongs to Asura Varga and may be her bf is from Rakshasa varga"
*"A woman churned out for kissing"
*"Girl who opened her curls to be kissed"
*"Who would ever want to kiss her, face like a crowshit"
*"daughter of a whore"
*She is a Maoist"
*"Do you want to kiss any lovers or any men walking down the street?"
*"Seeing her face itself I understood whats her disease. Some one should have lot of guts to kiss this shitty face"
*"She should have been born for a single father."
"Is she so desperate?"
"If you wanna sleep around go ahead you bitch, born for a dog"
*"Poor cry of an AIDS patient"
*"Dont make this bitch born for a neighbour famous."
*"show your desperateness on a bed not on the middle of a road, If you still dont get anybody try with animals"

I think this is enough to give you people a glimpse of what nonsense is happening in that lowly group, which again I realized just after this post. If you like to check out yourself then click here .To those men who commented on her,I honestly want to zip my mouth because I am still searching for words to reply.Since others aren't so cheap to stoop to your levels far below It is kind of difficult for us to tell you how worse you are as human beings to tear open a simple matter and dig it till the infinite to just leave yourself so stinky. Just think twice before you speak about somebody`s looks! Looks are always powerful but looks are always superficial! Why do you people say worse things about her parents or her up-
bringing? She is being called a slut because she spoke against some fake-moral, attention-seekers??

You know what, There was a similar incident which again happened in Kerala where a man who tried to help a woman by giving lift till her home who had no choice of making a call or had no conveyance to reach home on that night due to rain. On the way so called 'sadachara police' or Moral Police stopped their vehicle and questioned them making it a big issue ending up at Police station. The man eventually had to face a divorce and the woman involved lost her morality. Do they deserve all this? She was being a good girl by trying to reach home before late and the man was trying to help the woman by not letting her stay at an unsafe place like railway station till dawn. They were total strangers but traveled in the same train everyday.

Now this is why I hate Moral Police. They are a group of jobless people in the name of culture destroying life of others who carries a gentle and decent living. If you really care about your culture start from your own home!

Honestly Am not supporting her word by word. I agree that she is wrong when she spoke about Lord Krishna since those 'leelavilasam' are stories not from Bhagavat Geetha or Bhagavatham (two major Hindu scriptures) but from a poet`s artistic work of 'Jayadeva Geetha Govindam' as well as 'Bramha Puranam' So Sree Krishna`s love life is not spoken about in Holy Scriptures. Myself being a staunch believer of Hinduism I felt offended by her remark on Lord Sri Krishna. But as we all know, Sri Krishna is known as the Lord of Love in Hindu mythology and so we can neither deny nor accept if someone make a comment about it. Else wise I totally support her freedom of expression against 'Yuvamorcha Sangam' or the 'Sadachara Police'. And now I insist you to check this link (Click here) to see yourself the truth behind fabricated news of Jaihind TV about this incident. How sad of television media being pure yellow journalism!

P.S:- Nobody is trying to insult Indian culture or corrupt it. Every individual has their choice to follow what they want. Indian Constitution Article 19,20,21 and 22 provides its citizens Freedom of Speech and Expression.

  1. Thats a pretty strongly worded response! Glad to see girls coming out with their opinions - that's what the society needs these days.

The best thing I liked about your response was that it was balanced and was not an emotional outpour. Especially the way in which you could weed out the reference to Krishna from Jisha's post Her post, I felt was a lot more emotional than it was balanced.

As you rightly said, people need to examine whether they have the right to give a discourse on behaviour to the society. Maybe people are afraid to look into themselves, because they are just not sure of what they would see then.

Yes, the moral brigade surely deserves a rap on the knuckles. The polarization of opinion on any issue these days is frightening. There's no one who seems to prefer the mean path. Its either my way or the highway.

I Wish you touched more upon the yellow journalism that our channels indulge in these days which is even more pathetic than the mindless activities of the moral brigade. But maybe that could be the topic of a whole new post - as to how our media handled the solar case, the blue-blackmail case, the thettayil scandal and the current issue. Wish you would do that in the same unbridled fashion :)

There's another angle to that report - about the sale of drugs and weed in such joints. That's true and something must be done to raid such shady cafes and joints and punish them if they do so.

Finally, a word on another trend that's becoming more and more visible. Visit a beach or a park where families gather on evenings. You will find couples shamelessly indulging in activities in the full view of the public. Some of the actions aren't really expressions of affection, but they are expressions of lust. It does not make for pretty viewing and one wishes they rented a room for the purpose. A casual hug or a kiss is different from desparate groping. Maybe a visit to the Marina after 6:30 PM would make things clearer. But that said, we have no right to beat them up or do anything of that sort. If you don't like it, turn away, turn a blind eye. You have no other business to do anything else.

Well said and keep writing. And off the topic, try to move your blog to Wordpress, it's much better!

    1. Thank you Rahul for your compliments.
I donot support the freedom of expression when it comes to 'act of lust' But here I guess the scenario is different. This is a manipulated political drama with the help of Jaihind TV to canvas people. So question of drugs is out of place. It was a reputed enterprise in my opinion.
Yes I will be writing more about yellow journalism in my coming po

  2. Well said Sri Laxmi..
Well it took me by surprise when a friend told me about something the youth of our state are planning to organize in Cochin and Calicut.. But then it equally shocked me when another guy.(5 years elder to me) forwarded a message saying that .. Or else I will post the real one..
Sorry for the language but couldn't help.. This is the response of a typical malayali.. As you said Sri Laxmi, the Indian Constitution provides us with the right to expression.. And the same land is governed by the moral codes that someone created a long time back...

Criticizing is one thing and vandalizing is an another.. Think before you talk.. Nobody asked to make prostitution legal.. They just asked the so called 'sadaachara police' to stop their mad run..

One thing I still don't understand.. When these people see two people kissing each other with the permission of each other they beat them up.. Why is nobody raising their voices or raising their arms against those animals who brutally rape women without their permissions.. Why aren't anybody calling for strikes and hartals for a stern law to be passed regarding the same..

Swami Vivekanandan paranjathu satyama.. Keralam oru bhraanthalayam..

  3. Thankyou Achacha.. I totally agree to your point. Honestly yes moral police has strong wings to fly to the spot in few seconds when its a kissing scene or anything as such interesting for a typical mallu local. But when a serious issue like rape happens.. none of these culture upholding idiots turn up to show their emotional outbursts. All those culprits walk around free and happy once on bail. Sathyama.. keralam oru bhranthalayam!

  4. Awesome write up! Many of those moral police must read this.

  5. Anu, what u expressed here is absolutely correct. Ente abhiprayathil Keralathile aalkar verum narrow minded aanu. We boast of highest % of educated people, but no use. Doing such crazy stuffs and criticizing just for the sake of publicity..... simply shows that we still live in the age of animals than being a proper human. Waste of life. Instead of developing the place where you stay and ultimately the nation, we just think of stupidity and just stupidity.

I wish someday people realise the fact that being open minded is the only way to survive in the coming future.

    Best wishes Anu. Keep blogging.!
